International students can also call on the help of the social service of the Crous de Lyon. Here is a look at the role of the social service and how to apply for it.

Going through tough times? Having financial hardship?

Lyon Crous social service is available to all students (state and/or regional scholarship recipients and nonrecipients). Please email us at ssocial@crous-lyon for indicating the institution you are enrolled in, your major, the reason of your request and your phone number.

The social service missions

Social workers’ (in French “social services assistants“, or ASS) roles include welcoming, assisting, listening to and providing information to students enrolled in higher education institutions. ASS offer a confidential space for speaking and listening, a space necessary to finding solutions and setting an action plan with the students involved.

The social service works in close collaboration with the Crous administration, universities, other higher education providers, regional authorities and various instances. If the situation requires it, students may be redirected to specialized services.

Means of action

Under specific conditions and upon the assessment of your social situation, multiple aids can be mobilized.

Specific one-time allowance

This is a financial aid for students who encounter temporary difficulties. This exceptional aid, subject to social assessment, is intended for students in initial training in a higher education
institution (upon providing proof of enrollment).

Our social workers examine the students’ requests and submit them anonymously to a technical commission.

Existing aids

Depending on the situation, the social service will refer the students to other specific assistance solutions
• Social Funds for Student Initiatives (FSDIE)
• Exceptional refund of university fees
• Associative structures
• Grants offered by foundations
• The Region’s emergency aid fund (post-high school education in health and social work)

The social service can also assist students referred by the Student Social services or the Region’s administrative services :

Regarding grants based on social criteria and regional grants

Some submissions can’t be examined by the grant services because documents proving specific situations are missing. Our social service and the students involved can discuss and provide additional information to ensure their submissions are better understood and then cleared.

Regarding the annual specific allowance options (“Aides Spécifiques d’Allocation Annuelle” or ASAA)

Students can contact our social service when their situations qualify for social assessment, because of the loss of family ties, financial isolation, returning to study after a break, or if they are above the age limit for other grants.

Advice and guidance

Our social workers provide information regarding the various housing options and their conditions of access (guarantor, deposit…), and refer them to the competent organizations (Crous Housing Service, Lokaviz, CAF, Visale, CLLAJ…) when necessary.

Our social service
